Actions have consequences and kids, who often believe themselves invulnerable, eventually have to deal with the changes that come from the passing of someone, and that life changes, but keeps on going. I also liked that the author didn't shy away from death and pain. I loved all the different characters, and really enjoyed the old-school valiant hero and terrible villain. The whole book reads very smoothly and there is no chance of you getting lost along the way. The descriptions are brisk but just enough to give you a feel of the forest and its inhabitants, while the banter is plentiful and lively. The second favorite of mine, Silent Sam, is plain cute, and the Sparrow and Rabbit are great supporting characters! But the star of the show is definitely the writing style and the enchanted atmosphere of this world. He is the protagonist and you can't help but adore him, together with Constance the Badger and the old Methuselah mouse. Matthias starts out as an adorable pup of a mouse and ends up a good and formidable young adult mouse.

I did not read “Catch-22” in 1961, because I was only fourteen years old. In those days, I was living in Britain, which did not send soldiers to fight in Indochina but whose government did support the American war effort, and so, when I was at university, and afterward, I, too, was involved with thinking about and protesting against that war. “Catch-22,” like “Slaughterhouse-Five,” was a novel about the Second World War that caught the imagination of readers who were thinking a lot about another war. Kennedy began the escalation of the United States’ involvement in the conflict in Vietnam. Eight years earlier, in 1961, Joseph Heller had published “ Catch-22” and President John F. I mention Vietnam because, although “Slaughterhouse-Five” is a book about the Second World War, Vietnam is also a presence in its pages, and people’s feelings about Vietnam have a good deal to do with the novel’s huge success. 1972 was the year of inching slowly toward the Paris Peace Accords, which were supposed to end the war in Vietnam, though the final, ignominious American withdrawal-the helicopters airlifting people from the roof of the American Embassy in Saigon-would not take place until three years later, at which point, by way of a small footnote to history, I had become a published writer. I first read “ Slaughterhouse-Five” in 1972, three years after it was published and three years before I published my own first novel. Kurt Vonnegut’s “Slaughterhouse-Five” is humane enough to allow, at the end of the horror that is its subject, for the possibility of hope. The letters are dated between 27 May and 26 October 1963. The new letters – two by Van Osdall and three by Lewis, some of the last he ever wrote – show that the questions that vexed Lewis then continued to dominate his thoughts to the end. The book helped inspire a TV movie and stage play, Shadowlands, and an Oscar-nominated 1993 film of the same name, starring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger. When she died of bone cancer, Lewis wrote A Grief Observed, his classic 1961 work on mourning and how faith can survive it. Some of my favourite characters are back and some new characters are introduced. Which one, which one?! I'll let you read to find out. As with SO many teenage series there's always a love triangle and this one is hard for me because I like both the guys involved. Sophie is back with lots of spunk and spunks in tow. As always with a series there was a huge cliffhanger at the end of the second book and left you dying to find out what happened to everyone after the fire. I hadn't read anything like it, since then I have but you never forget your first. I can remember the feeling I had when I read 'Hex Hall' (the first in the series), it was amazement. Reuniting with his childhood friend, the four continue to play the game that the adults previously started 26 years ago, and intend to finish it to make the consequences of the game finally disappear. When they start playing, they release a long time trapped man from the game's jungle world, where he explores the effects his disappearance made on town. The film follows the series of events of two children who move into a longtime empty house and discover a supernatural board game that upon players rolls of the dice, sends wild animals and other jungle hazards to manifest into their world and antagonise the players and surrounding neighbourhood. And of course my notes are all at home in Australia. Well, here I am in New Zealand, having brought the book with me to finish off Book 3 at last, and once again I was floundering with the characters and the plot. I’d read Books 1 & 2, and couldn’t remember who the characters were and what they did when I’d started Book 3, so I went back to the beginning of the trilogy, making lots of notes as I re-read the two books, and then FWIW I wrote my reviews of the two books. Following on from my previous posts about The Wreath ( Kransen, Book 1 of Sigrid Undset’s Kristin Lavransdatter trilogy), and Book 2, The Wife (Husfrue), I now find myself in the same boat as before.
